Internet and Computer Security

With all the publicity given to internet security, one might be tempted to buy every security product on the market and react to every email that trumpets a computer security threat. Eventually you could become so paranoid you will refuse to use your computer or sign on to internet access for fear of having your identity stolen or wiping out your hard drive.

The fact is that, like many other risks and issues in life, windows security and security issues are best addressed by common sense.

There is no way you can protect yourself from every risk in life and information security is no exception to that rule. However, if you follow some basic guidelines you can reduce your security risk to the bare minimum. In spite of the latest security announcements and tools, the best security methods are founded in the following basic techniques:

1.    Install a good virus detection and protection software product, preferably one to which you subscribe online. These provide daily updates as new viruses, malware and threats are identified. The annual fees are reasonable (significantly less than $100) and well worth the investment.

2. Set your windows security updates to automatic so you don’t have to remember to check for updates periodically. These updates will occur in the background and can be set for off hours. Your machine does not have to be on to update the security settings and tools.

3.    Establish a firewall on your computer and be sure it is enabled so that it works at all times. This is important whether your computer is a standalone or part of a local or wide area network.

4.    Be careful about what you download from online sites. Do not download music, games or software unless you know the site well and have thoroughly researched its reputation. You don’t want to download viruses and/or spyware and corrupt the files on your computer.

5.    Be cautious when you visit new web sites. If you do not know the site, you should look for signs of stability and professionalism. A reputable site will have visible contact information for phone, email and we inquiries. If the site sells products or services, the credit card or payment methods will be encrypted to secure your data. The company will list products and services and references and may talk about its staff and history. These are all indicators to tell you that you are visiting a reputable site.

6.    Information security starts with a good security policy. Do not answer email messages from people you do not know. If you are unsure of the identity of the person or company writing to you, do not click on the link in the email. Instead, launch your browser and type in the verified web site address for the company web site you want to visit. Links in unverified email will often lead you to bogus sites that may look like a real site but will get you into trouble.
